Cuomo Trades Albany for the Order Book

Andrew Cuomo has a new title, and this one didn't require an election. OKX founder and CEO Star Xu announced on X that the former New York governor is joining the digital currency exchange's board of directors, formalizing a relationship that's been building since 2023. Xu called it a step toward making OKX the, "infrastructure layer for both traditional and digital finance," which is a mouthful, but the plain version is simpler: OKX wants a name that regulators and Wall Street already trust.

For readers who've been more focused on faucets and FreeWallet than exchange politics, OKX is one of the largest digital currency exchanges globally, serving over 100 million customers who trade, hold, and move digital assets through it. It's also the exchange that pleaded guilty last year to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, agreeing to pay over $504 million in penalties before relaunching in the United States. Cuomo was already in the building for that chapter, advising OKX through the federal investigation that produced it.

"Governor Cuomo has been a thoughtful voice for OKX for years... we need people who understand how governments, institutions and markets actually think."

Why would a former governor want a board seat at a digital currency exchange? Timing helps explain it.

Cuomo lost the 2025 New York City mayoral race to Zohran Mamdani, who spent part of the campaign criticizing Cuomo's OKX advisory work while the DOJ probe was active. The board seat isn't really a pivot so much as a continuation — Cuomo already co-chairs a separate joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, aimed at tokenizing NYSE-listed equities and futures. ICE bought into OKX at a $25 billion valuation back in March, picking up its own board seat in the process, so Cuomo's move puts a familiar face on both sides of that arrangement.

Qualifications on Paper

A three-term governor, a former state attorney general, and three years of hands-on experience helping a digital currency exchange survive a federal money-laundering case. Whatever one makes of that résumé, it is not a thin one for navigating Washington.

Cuomo has framed his interest as being about blockchain rather than digital currency specifically — the democratization of finance version of the pitch, bringing basic financial services to underserved populations.

He's said he'll spend most of his working hours on the OKX-ICE venture, with the rest going to a handful of nonprofits he hasn't named. One bit of trivia for the pop-culture side of this newsletter: the announcement landed the same summer Cuomo appeared alongside his brother Chris at a Tribeca Festival screening, a reminder that the Cuomo name is still doing double duty across very different stages.
