Someone Shot at Rihanna's House; And Now Everyone Is Saying Jay-Z's Name

Okay, I need someone to sit down with me and explain what is happening, because I just read something that made me put down my cocoa and stare at the wall for five full minutes.

Apparently, there is a woman named Rihanna. And I know what you're thinking — yes, I have heard of her. Umbrella. We Found Love. The halftime show where she was pregnant and I cried a little. That Rihanna. Nine Grammys. Fourteen number-one hits. A billion-dollar makeup empire. She is, by any measure, one of the most famous people on planet Earth. We're all on the same page.

So why does it feel like the world has completely lost its mind?

Here's what happened. At around 1:21 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, at least ten shots were fired toward Rihanna's home in Beverly Hills. Ten shots. In the afternoon. In Beverly Hills, California, a place where the biggest drama is usually someone parking in front of your topiary.

The suspect is a 35-year-old woman named Ivanna Lisette Ortiz from Orlando, Florida, who faces multiple felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats. Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky, and their three children were home at the time and were all physically unharmed. Thank goodness for that.

Now. This is where I get lost.

People are saying Jay-Z's name. Everywhere. In my mentions, in the group chat, at the beauty salon. Jay-Z. Beyoncé's husband. The rapper. That Jay-Z. And I'm sitting here going — wait, what does he have to do with any of this?

So I did some reading, and honestly, I wish I hadn't. Apparently, there are resurfaced interviews where Jay-Z — who signed Rihanna to his label when she was only sixteen years old — admitted that he held her in his office from the afternoon until 3:00 a.m. before she signed her record deal. He says it like it's a funny story. People online are not finding it funny.

And then there are the Epstein files. You've heard of those. The theory spreading across social media suggests Jay-Z may have had a hand in the attack — though this is entirely unsubstantiated, and law enforcement has made no such connection. The LAPD says this is a stalker case. And yet the whispers are everywhere.

I cannot verify any of what people are saying. I am a person who still uses prepaid cellphones. But I will say this: there is a lot of smoke in this room, and I was not prepared for any of it when I sat down with my mid-morning cocoa.

What I know for certain is that Rihanna is okay. Her babies are okay. Ortiz's bail is set at over $10 million, and the case is moving through the courts.

The rest of it? I need to go lie down.
