Bridging Cash and Digital Currency: What Payward’s Saldo Bank Acquisition Means for Kraken Users

Payward, Kraken’s parent company, is acquiring Lithuania’s Saldo Bank to meet demand for integrated banking and digital asset services.

Unified Financial Services

The acquisition aims to bring traditional banking and digital assets into one ecosystem. Payward co-CEO Arjun Sethi says customers want services like those of conventional banks. Payward plans to combine cash, digital assets, tokenized stocks, and credit on a single platform, reducing reliance on third-party banks, wire transfers, and fragmented services.

Lending, Cards, and Returns

Saldo Bank’s EU banking license could enable Payward to offer consumer and business loans, term deposits, and debit and credit cards. Customers may also be able to borrow or lend against digital currency without selling it, improving access to liquidity and potential returns.

Support and Rewards

Reports do not specify changes to customer support or dedicated rewards programs. However, consolidating cash and digital assets at one regulated institution could simplify transfers. Licensed deposits and lending may also offer ways to earn interest.

Timeline

The deal requires regulatory approval and is expected to close in 2027, so users will not see these features immediately. If completed, Payward would become the first digital asset firm to own a bank in Europe, creating a bank-grade platform for fiat and cryptocurrency.
